Some of the most common causes of hair loss:

Childbirth:

After a woman delivers her baby, many hairs enter the resting phase of the hair cycle. Within three months some women may see large amounts of hair coming out in their brushes and combs. This condition can last between one to six months but reverses itself completely in most cases.

High fever, severe infection, severe flu:

Four weeks to three months after a high fever or severe infection or flu you may experience excessive hair loss. This condition also usually corrects itself but may require treatment.

Thyroid disease:

Loss of hair can be caused by overactive or under-active thyroid and can be reversed with proper treatment

Inadequate protein in diet:

People who go on crash diets or have abnormal eating habits can develop protein malnutrition. Your body then saves protein by shifting growing hairs into the resting phase and massive hair shedding can occur.

Medications:

Some prescription drugs can attribute to and cause loss of hair, this includes cancer treatment drugs, and birth control.

Low serum iron:

Iron deficiency can occasionally attribute to hair loss.

Major surgery/chronic illness:

These can be a tremendous shock to the system and can cause increased hair shedding, this condition may result in indefinite hair loss.

Alopecia areata:

The cause is unknown, but can cause complete baldness in people of any age.

Ringworm of the scalp:

Caused by a fungus and is contagious. Can be cured with oral medication.
